Meet… Derek McManus

Current job: Chief Operating Officer

Tell me a little about your position and what you do on a day-to-day basis: 

I run a team that looks after our Network, IT, Fraud & Security, Service Management of our Enterprise Customers, Property and the implementation and rollout of Smart Metering to 23m homes.

Why O2? What made you apply? I applied by accident many years ago as a way of getting out of a boring job I did at the time for BT in Glasgow.

What makes O2 a great place to work? We are lucky to work in one of the most dynamic industries on the planet, making a real difference to our customers every single day but for me it’s our people.

What keeps you motivated to go to work each day? That’s easy, see above answer

Reflect back from Day one to now. How have you evolved in your current job? How have you evolved as a person? Even though it feels like only yesterday I have been here for nearly 29 years so I would like to think I have grown somewhat in that time.

What advice would you give someone who is seeking the same line of work? Aim high, be positive with everyone around and work hard.

What is your proudest accomplishment on the job? Hard to pick just one so I will say seeing O2 become the company it has and being able to say I was part of that journey

What are your hobbies outside of work? Many from sport, staying healthy, travel, and especially spending time with friends and family.
